June 3rd to 5th 2025, FIAN Zambia joined members of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on a three-day field mission to Mumbwa District as part of efforts to ground Zambia’s upcoming National Agroecology Strategy in practical realities and community experiences.

The visit featured engagements with district officials, community members, and local organizations actively promoting sustainable agriculture. Farmers from the Nambula Area Women’s Association shared their transition from conventional methods to conservation agriculture, particularly practices that improve moisture retention and crop resilience. However, limited awareness and access to agroecological knowledge remain key barriers

At the Mumbwa District Agroecology Platform, stakeholders highlighted early impacts of agroecology including the use of local seed varieties, organic pest control, and small livestock integration. Demonstration plots and training by Green Living Movement have helped shift mindsets and increase participation, although market access and data tracking remain major gaps.

The team also visited By Life’s community demonstration site, which supplies organically grown vegetables to local institutions boosting farmer confidence and income generation.

This field mission underscored the importance of farmer-led innovations, practical training, and supportive systems to drive agroecology forward. FIAN Zambia remains committed to ensuring that the National Agroecology Strategy reflects grassroots needs and promotes the right to food, sustainable livelihoods, and climate resilience.
