On March 29, 2025, FIAN Zambia and the Zambia Alliance for Agroecology and Biodiversity (ZAAB) hosted the Parliamentary Committee on Food Security and Nutrition in Mumbwa District to showcase the benefits of agroecological farming. The visit provided an opportunity for policymakers to witness first-hand the transformative impact of organic farming practices.
One of the highlights of the visit was an interaction with Gilbert Naife, a pioneering farmer who has embraced Bokashi composting, a natural soil enrichment technique that enhances soil fertility without relying on synthetic fertilizers. Gilbert’s success story demonstrated the multiple benefits of organic farming, including improved soil health, increased crop yields, and resilience to climate change.
His experience reinforces the critical role that agroecology can play in strengthening Zambia’s food systems. By reducing dependency on chemical inputs, organic farming promotes biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and local economic growth. It also ensures access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food for communities while safeguarding the rights of small-scale farmers. The visit by the Parliamentary Committee marks a significant step toward fostering policies that support agroecological transitions in Zambia. For Zambia to build a resilient and sustainable food system, we must continue engaging policy maker and communities in advancing agroecological solutions that put people and plant first.
