FIAN Zambia: Advocating for the Right to Food Amid a National Drought Crisis

In March 2024, FIAN Zambia demonstrated its unwavering commitment in Advocating for the Right to food and nutrition by addressing the devastating drought crisis that gripped the nation. As Zambia faced one of its worst climate-induced challenges in decades, FIAN Zambia stepped forward to highlight the urgent need for action through strategic advocacy and evidence-based interventions. On March 1st and 7th, 2024, FIAN Zambia issued two critical press statements that shed light on the severe impact of the drought on food security and livelihoods across the country. These statements emphasized the human rights dimensions of the crisis, including the loss of access to adequate food, water, and sustainable livelihoods for millions of Zambians.

The organization’s advocacy did not stop at raising awareness. The press statements were disseminated through major national media outlets and shared directly with key government actors, including:

·        The Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Human Rights, and Governance,

·        The Committee on Agriculture, Land, and Natural Resources, and

·        The President of Zambia, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema.

This ensured that the voices of marginalized communities reached decision-makers at the highest levels.

Government Recognition and Collaboration

FIAN Zambia’s timely intervention caught the attention of President Hichilema, who formally acknowledged the organization’s efforts and commended its evidence-based advocacy. This recognition marked a significant milestone, as it underscored FIAN Zambia’s growing role as a trusted voice in shaping national policy responses to crises.

In a show of trust and collaboration, FIAN Zambia was invited to contribute to the development of the National Food Security Drought Response Plan, spearheaded by the Office of the Vice President through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU). This invitation highlights the organization’s influence in ensuring that human rights, particularly the right to food and nutrition, remain central to Zambia’s drought response strategy.

Why This Matters

The drought crisis in Zambia has had far-reaching consequences, affecting millions of people across 84 districts. Crop failures, water shortages, and skyrocketing food prices have left families struggling to survive. Vulnerable groups, including women, children, and rural communities, are disproportionately impacted, with many relying on just one meal a day.

FIAN Zambia’s advocacy aligns with Zambia’s obligations under International Treaties, such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which recognize the right to adequate food and nutrition. By integrating these principles into national responses, the organization helps ensure that Zambia’s food systems are resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.
