On 20th February 2025, FIAN Zambia in collaboration with Zambia Alliance for Women and Mumbwa District Women Association, conducted a Right to Food Assessment in Petauke and Mumbwa District to evaluate food security, livelihoods, access to social protection programs, and essential services such as healthcare, education, water and sanitation. The assessment, which covered communities in Zune/Mamba, Chileka, Nyamphande, and Mtondo in Petauke and various locations in Mumbwa, provided critical insight into the challenges people face in securing adequate and nutritious food, as well as the effectiveness of government interventions. One of the key concerns raised across all the communities in both districts was the devastating impact of drought on farming and trade. Prolonged dry spell, erratic rainfall, and pest infestation have led to widespread crop failure and livestock deaths, pushing many households into extreme poverty and food insecurity. In both Petauke and Mumbwa, many farmers lost their investments in farming inputs, leaving them to unable to produce food. This has forced households to adopt survival strategies, such as selling livestock at below market prices to afford food.
