On June 10, 2025, FIAN Zambia took part in the launch and multi- actor’s consultations for Zambia’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights. The three-day event was in response to a recommendation from Kenya during Zambia’s third Universal Periodic Review (UPR), urging the development of a national framework to address corporate human rights impacts.
Hosted by the Human Rights Commission in partnership with UNDP and the United Nations in Zambia, the event opened with high-level remarks emphasizing the need to strengthen corporate accountability and human rights protection. Dr. Howard Ayo of the Technical Working Group unveiled a national consultation roadmap.
FIAN Zambia played a key role by facilitating the testimony of Mr. Cyrus Mwiinde from Mumbwa District, who described human rights violations caused by Amatheon Agri. These included blocked access to public roads, restricted water access due to dam construction, and delayed compensation for land acquisition issues severely affecting livelihoods and community wellbeing.
In working sessions with civil society, FIAN Zambia advocated for:
Domestication of international human rights instruments
Criminalization of corporate abuse
Mandatory Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA)
Sector-specific legislation
Stronger community sensitization and access to grievance mechanisms
The process marks a critical step toward ensuring businesses operating in Zambia respect, protect, and fulfill human rights especially those of vulnerable communities.
